MANILA, Philippines — Iginiit ng Department of National Defense (DND) at Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) ang kanilang mandato sa Konstitusyon kasunod ng mga panawagang bawiin ang suporta ng militar sa pamahalaan dahil sa umano’y katiwalian sa mga flood control projects.
Ayon sa joint statement nina Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. at AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr., iresponsable ang mga pagtatangkang guluhin ang AFP sa pamamagitan ng politikal na motibo.
“At this critical juncture for our national security in the face of threats to our peace and regional stability, politically-motivated attempts to distract the Armed Forces of the Philippines from focusing on its mission are not only futile but also irresponsible,” wika nina Teodoro at Brawner.
Binatikos ng mga ito ang mga pagtatangka na kaladkarin ang AFP sa pamumulitika at binalaan ang mga nag-uudyok ng military action.
“The AFP is a “professional and non-partisan organization” that abides strictly by the Constitution and the established chain of command,” ayon sa dalawang opisyal.
“We reject all attempts to patronize the AFP by certain groups that insinuate or suggest unconstitutional, unilateral interventions by the former,” giit pa ng mga ito.
Idinagdag pa na ang pangunahing papel ng AFP ay ang ipagtanggol ang demokratikong institusyon at suportahan si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sa anti-corruption campaign nito na isang pambansang krusada na naglalayon ng isang responsable, matapat, at makatarungang pamahalaan.
