MANILA, Philippines — Ipinag-utos ni Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. na tingnan kung bakit mas gusto pang bilhin ng mga Pinoy ang imported rice lalo na ang Vietnamese varieties kaysa sa pagbili sa bigas na mula sa mga magsasaka sa bansa.
“The rising popularity of imported rice could signal a shift in consumer priorities.This trend is worth watching. It may be telling us something important about what Filipino consumers are looking for.It may now be a question of quality over quantity, and that could require a shift in our agricultural policy,” ayon kay Laurel.
Inutos ni Tiu Laurel ang isang comprehensive review ng consumer behavior at rice preferences upang makagawa ng hakbang na makakatulong sa local farmers at millers na mai-adapt ang market demands, pagandahin ang grain quality at pag-explore sa export potential.
Sinabi ni DA Undersecretary Christopher Morales –head ng Rice Industry Development Office (RIDO), na nagsagawa ng preliminary studies sa pagkukumpara sa Vietnamese rice sa locally available inbred rice.
Sa pag-aaral, lumabas na ang mga inbred varieties na kasalukuyang pinamamahagi sa ilalim ng Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) ay may katulad na katangian ng premium Vietnamese ST25. Ang ST25 ay kilala bilang pinaka magandang bigas sa mundo noong 2019 dahil sa haba, masarap na lasa, mabango na pinagsama ang pandan at jasmine, may maikling cultivation period at panlaban sa salinity at sakit.
Ang Vietnam ang nananatiling top rice source ng Pilipinas na mayroon tayong 47 percent ng total imports noong 2024.
