MANILA, Philippines — Sa kabila ng quarterfinal exit, proud na proud pa rin si Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone sa kanyang bataan na lumaban ng husto sa FIBA Asia Cup na ginaganap sa Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Namaalam na sa kontensiyon ang Gilas Pilipinas matapos lumasap ng 60-84 demolisyon sa Australia noong Miyerkules ng gabi.
“Mixed emotions. I liked our team. I liked the way we play, liked their togetherness. They are all good guys, easy to coach but I didn’t like our performance tonight,” ani Cone.
Aminado si Cone na dinomina ng husto ng Australia ang buong panahon ng laro.
Sa kabila nito, hindi nawawalan ng tiwala si Cone sa kanyang tropa na nagbuhos ng buong puwersa upang makasabay sa lakas ng Boomers.
“I didn’t think we stepped up as much as we wanted because no doubt, Australia’s athleticism and length, even though you see it on video and then you get up and play against them on the court, you realize they are very superior,” dagdag ni Cone.
Maganda ang inilaro ng Australia partikular na ang shooting spree nito sa three-point area sa likod nina Jaylin Galloway at Jack McVeigh.
Taliwas ito sa nangyari sa Gilas dahil hindi pumapabor sa kanila ang suwerte. Ilang mintis sa three-point territory ang nagawa nito na posible sanang nagpadikit sa laban.
“We had a hard time standing in front of them, challenging their threes.They moved the ball really well. They got their shots quick and they played a good pace,” ani Cone.
Solido rin ang depensa ng Australia kay naturalized player Justin Brownlee na nalimitahan lamang sa 10 puntos — malayo sa 29 puntos na nagawa nito kontra sa Saudi sa playoffs.
Gayunpaman, tapos na ang laban.
Kailangan na lamang tutukan ang mga susunod na laban na haharapin ng Pinoy cagers.
“But this is a great team to be around. I’m proud and honored to be on this team. But tonight was not a good performance for us,” ani Cone.
